How a resin murti is made, and what you need

Most murtis sold today in marble white, bright colours or gold are cast in polyester resin or built in FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic). This is the material list, step by step.

1. The body

For a marble-look murti, polyester resin is mixed with marble powder and white pigment, then hardener and accelerator go in and it is poured into a silicone or FRP mould. Large idols are laid up instead: resin brushed onto fibreglass mat, layer on layer.

2. Finishing

Once out of the mould, the murti is trimmed, filled and sanded smooth.

3. Colour

Clothes, hair, eyes and ornaments are sprayed or brushed in NC lacquers, thinned with NC thinner. On humid days a little retarder keeps the colour from blushing white. Cello tape masks one colour from the next.

4. Gloss

A PU or TT clear coat seals the colour and gives the shine.
